Toddler Tales: The Beginning

Our little boy Corey was born in November 2008 and turned our world upside down.  I thought I was prepared for the tiny helpless bundle that arrived after ten hours of labour culminating in an emergency C-Section, but no!  I was unprepared for how much love I would feel for my baby who, let's face it at that stage was just an eating, sleeping and pooing machine.  I was unprepared for how quickly the time would pass and that each milestone reached would mark such a his change in his development.

Two and a half years on we have an energetic, responsive, chatty, curious and hilarious toddler who fills our days with laughter and fun.  I'm not saying we don't have our challenging moments with tantrums and tears but that's what parenting is all about.  It's the most amazing thing we've ever done, the most challenging thing we've ever done, at times the most frustrating, but above all the most fun.

This blog is to tell our Toddler Tales about moments that if I don't write them down may just be forgotten as he grows up.  It's a privilege to have the responsibility of bringing up a new little person, who is already asserting his independence and I'm just hoping that we're doing an okay job.

Corey is pretty good at going to bed, but he does have a tendency to wake early, especially during the summer months when it gets so light so early.  He will read his books for a short while, but then we hear a little voice call out "I'm upset" or "I'm sad" or "Is somebody there?"  Eventually we give in and bring him into our bed for a little while before we all get up.  Over the last few weeks we've been treated to the "Iggle Piggle" dance which culminates in my husband being jumped on as Corey squeals "I'm squishing you Daddy."  A little while ago he was jumping on the bed and I suddenly got told "Mummy eat my cheesey toes."  Not quite what I had anticipated for breakfast!  Once we decide it's time to get up and dressed it's a race with Daddy to get downstairs with Corey waggling a finger and saying "Daddy don't watch the news, I want to watch CBeebies."

The other day he almost had me in tears when as I was getting ready to leave for work Corey looked at me and said "Don't go to work Mummy, stay with me."  Tonight I was definitely in tears when at bedtime he announced "I'm lucky to have you."

However, yesterday he started racing around the room shouting out "Oh God, oh God, oh God...."  Upon telling my mother-in-law about this it appears that she may have to take responsibility.  She has forgotten just how careful you have to be when you have a toddler around that will copy everything you say or do!

I just can't wait to hear what he comes out with next......

  1. The toddler years still seem a long way off to me, but in the meantime, I look forward to reading this and finding out some of the things that could happen in future!

That last comment reminds me of a story from a friend at work, whose neighbours were having extensive, noisy and disruptive building work done. One day their little girl was leaving for school as the builders were starting work. She shouted 'Bye Daddy. Bye f**king builders', as she merrily waved at them! Ooops.
